Ben Cure, Founder of CURE Fitness, is Putting a Personal Touch Back in Personal Training

Personal trainer Ben Cure discusses his journey starting a fitness business through a pandemic — and how his rise to social media stardom has allowed him to make the world a healthier place.

This blog post is part of our “Shop Talk” founder series, which celebrates Word of Web clients as we dive into what drives them and how they embrace the entrepreneurial spirit.

Tell us about CURE Fitness. What’s your elevator pitch?

CURE Fitness is an all-in-one personal training solution that helps people of all ages and skill levels reach their potential through fitness. I’m a coach, cheerleader, nutritionist, personal trainer, and motivator, working to provide ultimate support for all of my clients.

What sparked the idea behind your company? How did it come to fruition?

I started working at a gym in 2013 and gained all of the experience I needed — and more. During that time, I really sharpened my business skills, oversaw clients and team members, and started to understand the science behind fitness and personal training.

But, I started to feel like we were missing the mark with clients and were providing them with a poor experience in their health journey. I realized that the corporate gym world lacked the personal side of personal training and that really burdened me. I wanted to invest in people and provide them with value and a positive experience, all while making fitness more sustainable. My goal was to meet people right where they were and help them find the next phase in their fitness journey, so I started CURE Fitness back in 2019.

What unique problem does your company solve or what gap does it fill?

CURE offers people a sustainable solution to fitness through mostly online-based training. Virtual options really help solve scheduling conflicts because it breaks down barriers. I work with my clients to deliver a plan that works for them, and they have the flexibility to work out on their own time. I’m actually training people virtually in South Africa and Spain right now!

Tell us more about how you’ve used your website and social media to grow your company.

My goal is to give, give, give and offer clients a lot of value. I use my website as a tool to do that. I’ve got a free Fitness Anywhere eBook on there that’s great for my clients who travel and want to get a workout in on their own time, even if they only have 5 or 10 minutes to spare.

I’ve also been able to grow to about 100k followers on TikTok from all over the world! It’s great because I can refer people from social to my site and continue to provide them with extra value. Growing my social presence has also given me so much insight into what people need, so I’m always listening and learning.

What are the most challenging and most rewarding parts of what you do?

The most challenging part is that you do it all. From coaching in person and online to social media marketing and co-hosting The Perfect Fit podcast — I’m controlling all aspects of the business. When you take a step back and look at all of the skills you’ve learned, it’s pretty overwhelming. It really blew me away learning about what all goes into starting a business.

The most rewarding parts come from working with clients and making a positive impact on people’s overall health. I celebrate my clients’ wins like they’re my own because in a way, they really are.

Where would you like to see your company in 5 years?

I see CURE Fitness eventually moving completely online. I’d actually love to start a FREE gym for people, but that’s more like a 20 year plan! In 5 years, I can definitely see growing my team and having a couple coaches come onboard to join me.

What’s the best advice and worst advice you’ve ever gotten?

The worst advice I’ve gotten is to focus solely on the money. If you’re only in it for the financial side of things, you can’t create a sustainable business. You have to genuinely care about your customer and your product.

I’d say the best advice is to find someone who’s gone through the same battle that you’re going through and make them your mentor. Join groups for support, and if you can, be OK with working for free for the right person. You’ll learn so much!

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned since starting your company?

I’ve learned SO many lessons. I think the main thing is to be sure to take good care of yourself. If you’re burnt out, don’t push yourself too hard. Especially in this industry, it’s so easy for me to focus on the health and wellness of others, but I also have to remember to prioritize my own health. Your business will reflect how you’re feeling both mentally and physically, so never let your health take a backseat.

What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs just starting out?

If you can, pursue an internship in your area of interest early on — and don’t be afraid to ask questions. You have to be financially smart and put the work in, but your 9 to 5 corporate job will always be there. Take the leap!

What about your company are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of the impact I’m making and the results that I’m seeing with my clients. I’ve learned that people need so little encouragement to take that next step sometimes. Making the time for even just a short conversation can really help push someone to that next level.

It has also taken a lot of strength to start a business through a pandemic, so I’m really proud of surviving that!
